I apologize for the abrupt absence. After exams, etc I was just too tired to do anything productive and blogging started to feel a bit like a chore, so I decided to take a short unannounced vacation smile Anyways here’s what I’ve been up to the last week (aside from sleeping): I got to spend 3 DAYS in BERLIN with my class!!!!
I had a great, albeit stressful time, and if you don’t mind I’d like to share some pictures and highlight of Berlin with you in this post.
This was not only the first time I visited Berlin, but also the first time I rode on an actual overnight train!
I’m talking sleeping with 5 other people in a compartment smaller than my Daddy’s car, stacked left and right of the “room” leaving only a small strip of floor to tightrope across. It was probably one of the best and worse experience I ever had the pleasure of making.
Best because during the first trip, the ride from Austria to Berlin, I was an excited, restless, happy ball of energy, not even thinking about sleep. We ate snacks, talked and listened to music while watching the world whiz by. We read silly magazines and did goofy test. When it was finally time for us to go to sleep I so filled with enthusiasm that banal everyday tasks became a freaking epic!! Squishing myself in a washroom with Lizzy to brush my teeth or carefully making my way across the jostling hallway for one last bathroom stop with Catalina. And when a policeman knocked (or rather pounded) at our door at 3 in the morning demanding to see our passports, that only added to the thrill and excitement.
(Guess which one is me )
Worst because on our way back home, I was drop dead tired and could only think about sleeping. Unfortunately I somehow caught a serious cold that day so breathing was a rather tricky and time consuming task and also made sleeping soundly practically impossible. Additionally the little compartment was smothering hot and stuffy and I was still sticky from all the sunscreen I had used (In case you don’t know: I have red blonde hair and mozzarella white skin… I was CREATED for the purpose of getting a sunburn).
Also the rails were so dang loud!! I could hardly hear myself think!!
By the time we crossed the Czech border I wanted to kill something.
Baaah. I shudder even thinking about that 12 hour ride….. Moving on!
The first day was amazing though. Berlin is completely different to Vienna!! Way bigger and louder and busier.
New and old are thrown together without a second thought.
(If I’m being totally honest here I can’t quite remember what that was. I do, however, remember being told to pose in front of the sculpture because the contrast thingy looked so (and I quote) “flashy”. )
Speaking of old and new being jumbled up together, I saw a Buddhist monk chilling at Starbucks that day.
(Yes I took a picture of him.
Yes I disgust myself too.)
I’m telling you, the things we saw, the miles we walked could’ve been distribute over an entire week easy!
But it wasn’t all happy go lucky. Berlin, new and improved as it is, has terrible a history, the Berlin Wall
(did you know the left a piece of it standing because of it’s beautiful and colorful graffiti art?)
(side note: would you look at how much my hair has grown??! Last Christmas I barely had enough to cover my ears.)
Checkpoint Charlie, (and don’t have any of pictures if this because it has turned into a disgusting tourist attraction with people posing with fake american soldiers and I just couldn’t…)
and the Memorial for Murdered Jews are just a few reminders of that time.
Even though there were some depressing and humanity-doubting moments, I really do think I learned a lot.
Also I really hope that I’ll be able to get back to regular blogging especially since Friday was my last day of school!! YAAAAAAYYYY add to that I’m flying off to London Monday evening!! I’m so excited!! If there’s anything you think I should do let me know :D
